10 days in Austria | Stress 2 Strength Training Course Erasmus +

[PT]

No caso deste projeto, estás a ler a minha disseminação.

Não trazia expectativas e fiquei surpreendido, começo a perceber a nível intuitivo porque ouvi falar tão bem desta cidade e deste país.

I was halfway through my contract with Camp Suisse, in the Alps, when i started thinking about how i would go back to Portugal. Initially i had the “sick” idea of hitchhiking my way back which made a lot of sense to me since i had 3 weeks, from 15th August to 5th September, between the end of my first work experience in Switzerland and the start of the bike touring season in Portugal. But as i started to get my head around it i’ve understood that it would be a tough thing to do since i’ve packed so much on my way here and also bought a new (and freakin’ awesome!!) guitar that would need to carry back too. I needed some kind of a hiking trolley for that and a good one of those wouldn’t be cheap. Also i lacked energy for such a journey after the all the working. Maybe something for another time i’m sure.
So i start looking for Erasmus+ projects, why? To have a free trip back to Portugal. I know, not the best motivations! I’ll explain how that works later.
On a Whatsapp group i come across a call for this Training Course called Stress 2 Strength from Move 2 Be You association in Austria, from 17 to 26 of August. Sounds good to me because after having done 5 of these programs, i’ve been looking for ones with interesting topics instead of just going for the projects without giving it much thought. Also, i can visit for the first time my sister Regina in Vienna and be for the first time in Austria. Inscription form submitted with honest answers for the questions there and few days after i was accepted! Actually, this project gave me finally enough motivation to start my website because i’ve planned to do the dissemination through public blog posting so, here we are :)

For the ones who are not aware of it, the European Union has a lot of programmes to fund things that help build the “European Values”, one of which is Erasmus+. It’s not only academic mobilities and there is more things that are born out of that ecosystem. The mobilities for youth workers or Training Courses (KA153-YOU) are an example of that. The goal is to empower these people with tools to improve their work, whether they belong within a company, an NGO, or are freelancers, in order to achieve a better level of education for young people. I think this pre-requisite is pretty flexible considering the type of participats i’ve came across so far. I’ve seen from 18 to 50 year olds, from students to working professionals in education, all participating in the same exchange. If you find a call for applications to one of these programs, just check if your country is part of it, fill up their form, buy the flight tickets after their confirmation and go! Accomodation, food and all the trips are funded and will be free. The money you’ve spent on travel tickets will be refunded to you after you’ve completed your dissemination plan for the project. The way that works will vary from one to the other, in the case of this one, you are now reading my dissemination. I’ll leave here usefull links to find Training Courses and other opportunitites:

So there i went on the bus from Geneva to Vienna. I’ve chosen “Green Travel” for the first time and it was more than 15 hours long. It was the only way i could carry a lot of luggage and also make sure that the guitar would be safe. It was a good preparation for the challenge coming up on my way back to Portugal by bus, on a nearly 40 hour long trip. Overall, i could sleep well, reflect on the last months of work and read the beautifull farewell messages my friends left on my journal with some tears of happiness :) (Would like to write about it soon!).
On the way there, i honestly doubted if it was the right call. After 3 intense months of working daily and meeting new people every week (maybe more than 300 in total) between new staff and new campers, new names and new faces, sharing an apartment and a room, little alone time, a lot of things happening and to be processed, would it be wise to start a 10 day program now, somewhere i’ve never been with 30 new people and make sure i participated actively in all that? I went with little to no expectations. I was tired and thought i would be better off coming back home. But i was so wrong!

Arriving in Vienna was so smooth. The city was on its Sunday rest (very noticable in these countries, contrasting to Portugal), so quiet, clean, organised, fresh with a cloudy sky to give us a break from the sun, beautiful and also historical. I had no expectations about this place and was surprised. I start to get a feeling of why i’ve heard such good things about this city and this country and become curious.
Arriving at the Wombat Hostel was equally seamless. As i became aware of how a hostel with high standards works, also very clean, organised, calm but still with that open and exciting spirit in the air, i became more keen on trying to book more stays like this. It was just next door by the market that i met Carlos, Shilpi and Anastasia, and ate a lovely lentil soup as i connected with my first friends from the project. We planned to share a group ticket for tomorrows trip and what i nice group it formed just by chance. The enthusiasm and good feelings grow naturally between each other.

The following day, we met more friends on the way including the project facilitators (leaders), Bart and Sheng. A few minutes of conversation were enough to feel the excitement grow, the conversations are lovely, profound yet simple, enthusiastic but not overwhelming, long enough so that each one can then return to their personal space during the trip. Interesting people with love present in their lifes, chasing the best version of themselves and beign passionate about it. The arrival to Neu Nagelberg, right at the border with Czech Republic, was epic, on a old narrow gauge train with the most enthusiastic train driver and operator, sounding the horn through the fields as we went and explaining the origin of those old train routes, now turistic. It was a heartfelt goodbye as we stood alongside our suitcases waving to the train.

We were the first to arrive at the cosy wooden rooms on the “attic” floor in what seemed to be an old primary school that was standing next to a lake surrounded by forests. I think i took a nap straight away.
We finally met everybody at dinner and Mikonos, our chef, anounced that we would be provided with a vegan cuisine for the whole week, i was in heaven!
It was the ideal start with plenty of freedom and tranquility to arrive to that space and to the group. You can tell that the week is promising when on the first night the hours fly by and the conversations go deep about life and death topics and personal stories are shared with attentive ears all around the table
Before heading to bed, i have a look at the programme that was on a paper by the door: Morning Yoga and Meditation, Forest-based routine, partner stretching, exploring emotions, non-violent communication, acroyoga, free mornings, afternoons and nights, whole days for reflection and integration and circle sharing, co-creation workshops, talent night… i’m so glad i came here! :)
A project like this naturally has attracted different people that what i was used to find in these exchanges. Almost nobody smoked, and only a few drank alcohol. A lot of vegetarians and also vegans. Open and curious people interested in every kind of topic. From the start the atmosphere was very friendly, no hostility i felt, love was around and also a bubbling of curiosity for spiritual and emotional topics.

Has the saying goes, the rest is history. It was a lot of hours spent totally absorved by the present, discussing deeply with these new friends and family, sitting at the grass by the lake, walking in the thick and soft most that covered the whole forest like the perfect carpet, sitting in the floor at the common room after a workshop that opened something inside of us, just standing in the middle of the hallway during breaks, playing guitar and singing together in a acoustic karaoke, playing Kho Kho, football, table soccer and frisbee, washing the dishes and cleaning with joy, experiment with spiritual cerimonies next to the beautiful granite boulders with our backs laying in the most, sharing love through gentle touch, massaging, hugging and intimacy, sober nights of wild dancing, the joy of each meal and new desert that surprised us, always making me overeating, the love of the group, from compassion to the ones who didn’t quite fit in and felt like leaving earlier to the dedicated effort of late night tick removing from our misfortuned friends’ skin.

I had the opportunity to lead for the first time a 30min workshop where i’ve introduced the teachings of Divine Truth to a group of interested friends, which left me nervous but with a real feeling of satisfaction and happiness from the feedback received and the encouragement. I will cherish this moment and the people who took part of it forever in my memory.

It was for me the first time i’ve heard about these concepts presented in the accepted and “formal” way, in the terminology accepted in society, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Non violent communication (NVC), etc, which overlapped in a large extent with the spiritual topics that interest me and look to learn more about. That framming was important despite feeling some resistance with a few pressumptions which don’t align with what i believe in. Within my limitations and from what i can feel, i admit that at times the spiritual atmosphere was too permissive. But, overall, the amount of love created by this 35 people on that building created beautifull memories in all of us, and i for sure will keep them close to my heart. Sometimes is hard to believe that our society, as dark as it is, still allows for the creation and the public funding of such experiences where there are moments of light. I am gratefull for people like Bart, Sheng, Oshi and Vladimir for putting effort and time of their lives to be there and create this experience for all of us tho enjoy. I think that’s how you can change people and, slowly, the world.

And in the blink of an eye, it’s already the final day, we gather around the common room and share what that means to each one of us. Poems, genuine words and other creations come out and bring some tears with it. We are happy to have been here and are now sleeping badly and trying to squeeze a few more moments together in the late night, writing letters to each other, dancing and beign together one more time. We leave the following day on the train to Vienna with a whole carriage free for us, to enjoy our last group moment.

I’ve finished writing this and it’s been a month which reaffirms the importance of this Training Course in my life, the people i’ve met and new friends i’ve made and i leave here explicitly my suggestion, for the ones who haven’t tried to take some time from their lifes for these type of experiences: Do it, bring an open heart, you won’t regret it.

Pictures sometimes speak louder than words, so here they go. Until next time! :)
